Influenza related knowledge

What is influenza?
Influenza, referred to as "flu", is divided into four types: A, B, C and D, which is an acute respiratory infectious disease with strong infectivity and fast transmission caused by influenza virus, and can cause outbreaks and epidemics worldwide.

What is the difference between influenza and the common cold?
The common cold is mainly characterized by sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose, and coughing, while influenza has more severe systemic symptoms. There are four main characteristics:
① Significant high fever (38.9-40 ℃), rapid increase in body temperature in a short period of time
② Significant pain (headache, sore throat, muscle soreness)
③ Obvious fatigue and fatigue
④ Severe cough evident
A few severe cases may experience extrapulmonary manifestations such as pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, shock, cardiovascular and neurological symptoms, and even death.

What are the epidemic characteristics of influenza?

prevalence

Influenza generally has a seasonal high incidence in winter and spring, and there will also be summer epidemic peaks in our province and some southern regions.

route of transmission

Influenza is mainly transmitted by sneezing, coughing and other droplets, and is directly or indirectly infected by oral cavity, nasal cavity, eyes and other mucous membranes.
In addition, contact with items contaminated by the virus, crowded and enclosed rooms can also be infected through aerosols and other means.

susceptible person

The influenza virus is susceptible to all populations. However, people over 65 years old, children under 5 years old, chronic disease patients, and pregnant women have a higher risk of severe infection.

What should I do if I suspect I have the flu?
If flu like symptoms occur, seek medical attention in a timely manner, wear a mask throughout the medical process, minimize contact with others, and rest at home.
Children under 5 years old, elderly people over 60 years old, chronic disease patients, and pregnant women are more likely to experience serious complications after infection. If flu like symptoms occur, seek medical attention as soon as possible and use antiviral drugs under the guidance of a doctor as soon as possible.

How should individuals prevent it?
Vaccination against influenza
It is the most effective way to prevent influenza!

influenza vaccine
Usually, after 2-4 weeks of receiving influenza vaccine, antibodies with protective levels can be produced, which can significantly reduce the risk of influenza and serious complications for vaccinated individuals.

According to the "Technical Guidelines for Influenza Vaccination in China (2023-2024)", it is recommended that the following populations be given priority vaccination:

Medical workers: such as clinical personnel, public health personnel, health quarantine personnel, etc;
Participants and support personnel for large-scale events;
Vulnerable populations and employees in crowded places such as elderly care institutions, childcare institutions, welfare homes, etc;
Primary and secondary school teachers and students;
Detainees and staff members of the institution;
Other high-risk groups include elderly people aged 60 and above, children aged 6 months to 5 years old, chronic disease patients, family members of infants under 6 months old, caregivers, and pregnant women.

Do influenza vaccines need to be administered every year?

Due to the susceptibility of influenza viruses to mutation and the attenuation of immunity obtained after vaccination, it is recommended to receive influenza vaccines annually to provide effective protection.

How to prevent and control influenza on campus?

Campus and other collective units are key areas for influenza outbreak prevention and control. Various schools should strengthen daily health education for teachers and students, and do a good job in ventilation and environmental cleaning and disinfection.

Students and faculty should do a good job in personal hygiene, wash their hands frequently, pay attention to coughing etiquette, and report any discomfort such as fever in a timely manner.

Standardize the implementation of morning check-ups and registration systems for absenteeism due to illness. If an increase in patients with symptoms such as fever is found, it should be promptly reported to the local community and other health departments.

How can individuals prevent it?

1:wash hands more often

Wash hands frequently and pay attention to proper hand washing. Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth with dirty hands during normal times.

2:Cover the mouth and nose

When coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or bend your elbow. Dispose of used tissue in the trash can and wash your hands promptly.

3: Less aggregation

During the flu season, try to avoid going to crowded places. If necessary, wear a mask.

4: Normal ventilation

Open windows and ventilate at least 3 times a day, each time for at least half an hour, to maintain fresh indoor air.

5:Enhance immunity

Enhance physical fitness and dietary balance. Maintain scientific diet and daily life, actively exercise the body, and improve the body's immune system..
